There are many statements about grains that have been circulating within the general public that are not true: grains are bad for you, GMOs are dangerous, pesticides are dangerous, grains will make you fat, and grains cause inflammation. Statements such as these are not backed by any scientific evidence and are not true. In a recent blog post at www.goodineverygrain.ca titled “April Fool’s Day pranks often remind us of the fact that not everything you see, hear, or read is accurate”, we debunked these common myths. The blog post was shared on April Fool’s Day to make an impact with consumers. We want them to think twice the next time they read false or misleading information regarding grains, specifically whole grains. At Good in Every Grain, one of our main goals is positioning whole grains as healthy, smart, and nutritious in the minds of consumers. When consumers realize how beneficial whole grains are to their overall health (and tasty!) they are more likely to choose whole grain options over a grain-free diet. Also, learning about how their grains are grown will help grow trust between consumers and Ontario’s farmers. That trust is built on science-based agronomic practices that provide quality, safe, and affordable food. The blog post on debunking common myths aligns with this goal by reinforcing the notion that grains are healthy and many of the statements claiming otherwise are false and are not necessarily reinforced by scientific evidence.
