Ontario Grain Farmer April/May 2022

Good in Every Grain 30 www.GoodinEveryGrain.ca INDOOR RECESS KITS This past winter, Good in Every Grain introduced a new and exciting initiative for Ontario classrooms. With the cold weather in February, there are often more indoor recess days and teachers struggle to keep kids busy (and follow the Covid-19 safety protocols) in their classrooms. Ontario farmers know all about weather-related delays — rain, snow, frost… even hot days can cause havoc with farming plans. So, we thought we could help Ontario elementary teachers out by providing 30 Indoor Recess Kits to classrooms across the province! The objective of this initiative was to provide elementary teachers with a kit of materials that they can pull out in an ‘emergency’ like a last-minute indoor recess. The materials in the kits are fun and educational for young learners and include items they can play with, use, or complete independently during recess. The kits were incredibly well received — within minutes of the announcement of the project in early February, all the kits had been spoken for. The kits include play dough recipes (using Ontario grains!) and make-it activity cards, origami paper, bookmark supplies and instructions, card games, soybean wax crayons, sensory fidgets, and individual activity books with grain-based mazes, mandala, colouring pages, seek and finds, and more. Good in Every Grain sent out 30 kits, benefiting more than 770 students. Due to the incredible demand, there are 84 classrooms with an estimated 2,500 students on a waitlist. The kits were sent to schools across the province, including locations in the Greater Toronto Area, Port Colborne, Amherstburg, Niagara Region, Quinte West, and Penetanguishene. Initiatives like the Indoor Recess Kits help educators gain trust in Good in Every Grain and grain farmers in Ontario. Students also learn about Ontario grains including what they look like, what foods are made from grains, and what grains are grown in the province in a fun, engaging and interactive way that feels like play.
