ONTARIO FARMING STEMTERPRISE Following the success of Ontario Farming STEMterprise for Grade 3 classrooms, Grain Farmers of Ontario released the next edition of STEMterprise this fall to Ontario educators. Using the Grade 5 curriculum, Ontario students had the opportunity to develop STEM and entrepreneurship skills as they explored food, farming, and the human body through a pizza shop business this school year. PIZZA AND ONTARIO GRAINS This program helps students build STEM skills through a hands-on business challenge while deepening their understanding of Ontario grain farming and its role in everyday life. As students develop and operate a mock pizza shop, they trace the journey of ingredients from farm to plate and learn that many of the grains they eat are grown right here in Ontario. Along the way, they learn that farms are businesses, explore how grain-based foods support healthy diets, and gain a greater appreciation for the essential role grains play in feeding communities. The program also gives students a realistic look at modern agriculture. Through videos, research activities, and optional coding experiences, they see how farmers use technology, data, and innovation to improve efficiency, protect the environment, and produce food sustainably. By connecting STEM concepts to real-world farming practices and careers, students gain a more accurate understanding of today's agriculture while recognizing the many opportunities the sector offers beyond traditional farming. Beyond agriculture, the program reinforces the value of grains as part of a healthy lifestyle. Students explore Canada's Food Guide, nutrition labels, fibre, digestion, and heart health through engaging, hands-on activities that highlight the nutritional benefits of grain-based foods. By increasing awareness of where food comes from, how it supports health and the innovation behind its production, the program helps build informed future consumers who better understand, value and choose Ontario-grown grains.
