HIGHLIGHTING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN GRAIN PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION

New guide available for scouting Pythium root rot in soybean
Producing high soybean yields begins with establishing an even stand of vigorous plants. Studies have been conducted over the past three years to better understand interactions between seedling diseases, poor seed quality, and the environment, and their influence on soybean stand establishment. After soybean cyst nematode, seedling diseases are the number two yield limiting disease/pest in Ontario soybeans. Seedling diseases are believed to be caused by a disease complex composed primarily of oomycetes (Pythium spp., Phytophthora sojae) and fungi (Fusarium spp. and Rhizoctonia solani) pathogens.

To assist farmers with disease issues, a new scouting guide for Pythium Root Rot has been developed by Albert Tenuta, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food Field Crop Pathologist, in conjunction with 12 US land-grant University colleagues and the United Soybean Board. If you would like a copy of the pamphlet, contact Grain Farmers of Ontario at 1-800-265-0550, or the Ridgetown OMAF & MRA office at 519-674-1690.

The smartphone, tablet and computer are important tools on today’s farms. Each month, Ontario Grain Farmer magazine will highlight an app, online tool, or website that may help you in the field or in the farm office.

Pioneer Inoculant Value Calculator
DuPont Pioneer has created the Inoculant Value Calculator to help producers choose the best crop-specific inoculant for their operation.

Users can input 10 variables including crop, storage system, feeding rates, and market prices to evaluate the best inoculant.

The calculator is available online at www.pioneer.com, and the app is available for Apple products on the iTunes store.
