Farm issues in the provincial election

WE ASKED POLTICAL LEADERS THEIR THOUGHTS ON IMPORTANT FARM ISSUES

The Ontario Grain Farmer magazine recently contacted all provincial candidates in regards to their stance on four key agricultural issues. We have received general statements from the three parties as a whole and several candidates have provided additional comments.
We asked for each candidate’s stance on the following issues:
  1. Ongoing support for our permanent, cost-shared “Risk Management Program” which provides grain farmers price insurance when markets become volatile.
  2. Support for a public investment into research and development for the agricultural industry.
  3. General environmental issues, with specific regards to energy use and the opportunity for a 2% biodiesel mandate in Ontario.
  4. Support for market development opportunities such as bio-fuel and bio-product production in Ontario that will utilize our three crops, specialized crop production for targeted end uses, and increasing the profile of Ontario grain both within Canada and around the world.
Here are the responses we have recieved in full, without edits in no particular order.
